Staff Order Alerts vs Advanced Notifications
Comparing our free Staff Order Alerts plugin with WooCommerce's official Advanced Notifications extension: features, pricing, and which one fits your store.
Both plugins solve the same base problem - WooCommerce only emails the customer and the admin, and someone else needs to know about orders. They solve it differently, at different prices, and with one notable feature gap on our side. This is an honest comparison.
What Advanced Notifications offers
Advanced Notifications is the official WooCommerce.com extension, sold as a paid yearly subscription. Its headline features:
- Per-recipient notifications - set up notifications that go to different email addresses, filtered by product, category, or shipping class.
- Stock and low-stock alerts - notifications for low stock, out of stock, and backorders, not just order events. This is the feature most comparisons skip.
- Official support - a paid extension comes with WooCommerce.com support and compatibility guarantees.
- Per-product purchase quantities and totals - order notifications can include the order details a recipient needs.
If your main problem is "tell the buyer when stock runs low" or you want a single official extension with a support contract behind it, Advanced Notifications is designed for exactly that.
What Staff Order Alerts offers
Staff Order Alerts is our free plugin on wordpress.org, focused specifically on routing order information to staff, suppliers, and production:
- Status-transition triggers - rules fire on meaningful transitions like "order entered Processing" (paid), not on bare order creation, so failed checkouts never ping the kitchen.
- Partial-order privacy - when a supplier's rule matches two of six lines, their email contains only their two lines. Not the whole order, not the billing address, not the other vendors' lines. This is the feature most notification plugins quietly skip.
- Order claiming - a rule that already sent for an order records the claim and will not send twice, even if the status flickers back and forth. No duplicate picking lists.
- An honest delivery journal - every send is logged with a real status. "Accepted by the mail server" is not printed as "delivered", because a journal that lies makes debugging impossible.
The honest gaps
Being straight about where each one falls short:
- We have no stock alerts. Staff Order Alerts is about orders, period. Low-stock, out-of-stock, and backorder notifications are outside its scope. If that is what you need, this comparison ends here.
- Their support is official. A paid WooCommerce.com extension comes with their support channel. Ours is a free wordpress.org plugin with community support and our own documentation.
- Different price models. Advanced Notifications is a yearly subscription. Staff Order Alerts is free.

The verdict
Choose Advanced Notifications if you need stock and low-stock alerts, want everything under one official WooCommerce extension, or your organization requires a paid plugin with a support contract. That is a legitimate reason to pay for it.
Choose Staff Order Alerts if your actual problem is order routing - getting the right slice of each order to the kitchen, warehouse, or supplier without oversharing customer data or double-sending. That is what it was built for, and it costs nothing.
