Order Ops Fields vs Admin Columns

Admin Columns makes the WooCommerce Orders screen display existing data better. Order Ops Fields creates new internal data on orders. Different jobs - here is how to choose.

Both tools touch the same screen - the Orders list in wp-admin - which is why they get compared. But one is a display tool and the other is a data tool; that difference settles most of the question.

What Admin Columns is built for

Admin Columns Pro is a mature, widely used plugin for customizing admin list tables across WordPress:

  • Add columns for existing data - order totals, customer emails, coupon codes, custom fields and meta in the list view.
  • Sort, filter, edit - sortable columns, filters, and inline editing for values that already exist.
  • Works across all of wp-admin - not just orders; posts, media, users, and more.
  • Presentation-first - its job is surfacing data WooCommerce already stores in a layout your team can work with.

If your data already exists and the problem is "I cannot see it without opening each order", a column plugin is the right shape.

What Order Ops Fields is built for

Order Ops Fields starts one step earlier: the data you need on an order often does not exist yet.

  • Create typed fields - select lists, dates, checkboxes, text - for internal state like "awaiting supplier" or "promised ship date". These fields do not exist in WooCommerce until you create them.
  • Editable operational state - values change as work progresses: flags get toggled, references get filled in. The field is living ops state, not a display of checkout data.
  • Audit trail per field - who changed which value, and when. Column plugins display values; they do not track who wrote them.
  • Internal by design - ops fields never leak into customer emails, invoices, or the storefront.

The key difference: display vs state

The cleanest way to think about it:

  • Admin Columns answers "show me what is already on this order." Totals, meta, ACF fields, line data - organized into a readable grid.
  • Order Ops Fields answers "let my team record things on this order that WooCommerce has no place for." Internal statuses, deadlines, assignments - typed, editable, audited.

A column plugin can display a meta field beautifully, but somebody still has to create that field, keep its values consistent, and know who last touched it. That is the half column tools do not cover.

Side by side

Admin Columns Pro Order Ops Fields
Core job display existing data in list tables create internal operational state
Creates new typed fields no - shows what exists yes - select, date, text, checkbox
Inline editing yes, for existing values yes, for the fields you define
Audit trail (who/when) no yes, per order and field
Scope all admin list tables orders
Customer-visible data displays whatever exists internal only by design

Can they work together?

Yes - Order Ops Fields can create and govern the internal state while a column plugin arranges the rest of the list-table layout. But if the fields you need already exist as order meta and you only need a better view, a column plugin alone is enough.

The verdict

Choose Admin Columns if the data is already there and you need to see it - a better-organized Orders screen, sortable columns, filters on existing fields.

Choose Order Ops Fields if the data does not exist yet - if your team is stuffing operational state into order notes, spreadsheets, or memory and needs typed fields with inline editing and an audit trail. It is a data system for order operations, not a display layer.
